    The Indiana Optometric Association’s 113th Annual Spring Convention April 16-18 at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana will offer a spectacular selection of paraoptometric training courses on Saturday, April 17.  With two different tracks being offered, there will definitely be something of value for every paraoptometric and assistant.

    8-9 a.m. – Common Abbreviations in Charting/How to be a Scribe

    This course will cover common abbreviations used for efficient recording of patient’s visual testing, effective charting of these findings and how this information is used in the office.

    9-10 a.m. – Visual Fields

    This course will review the purpose of visual field testing and discuss testing techniques. It will describe the anatomy of the sensory visual pathway, disorders that can damage the pathway, and how damage affects the visual field. This course also discusses automated perimetry and techniques to assess the accuracy of the results.

    10-11 a.m. – Eye Spy with My Little Eye –
    Taking the Guesswork Out of Children’s Vision

    There is only one way to find out if a child’s eyes are developing properly and that is to examine them. Many underlying visual problems go unnoticed by the child. This course discusses common children’s vision conditions and the role of the optometric office in the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia.

    2-3 p.m. – Electronic Filing and E-Prescribing

    This course will help paraoptometrics to understand the process of electronic filing of prescription drugs to the pharmacy. Paraoptometrics will be able to use the information provided to implement an e-prescribing system into their practice.

     3-5 p.m. – Effective Medical Coding

    This course will provide an overview of the concepts involved in effective medical coding to minimize common errors and maximize reimbursements. PQRI coding will also be discussed.

    2-3 p.m. – All in a Day’s Work

    Your day at work is important to you, and so is your customer’s day at work. Quick information gathering will assist you in presenting the best lens options to make your customer happy. Actual customer scenarios will be presented.

    3-4 p.m. – Selling Sunwear All Year Long

    This course explores all the important aspects of and why all of your patients should have sunwear.

     4-5 p.m. – I Can't See

    Ever have a patient return to your office complaining that he or she can't see?  There can be dozens of reasons why this may be, even if the eyewear has been made perfectly!  This course will take a look at optical and psychological reasons why your patient may come in saying "I Can't See".  We will also learn some steps on how to deal with the angry patient.
