Details of the IOA Pharmacology Seminar
By law, Indiana licensed optometrists who hold an optometric legend drug certificate are required to complete a total of forty (40) hours of continuing education before the April 1, 2010 renewal deadline.   
 
Twenty (20) hours are required of all licensed optometrists in optometry education between April 1, 2008 and April 1, 2010.  In addition, most Indiana optometrists hold an optometric legend drug certificate.  Holders of this certificate are required to complete an additional twenty (20) hours of optometric legend drug continuing education between  April 1, 2008 and April 1, 2010.   
 
You can earn seven (7) hours of continuing education credit that applies to either type of renewal by attending the Indiana Optometric Association's Pharmacology Seminar on February 10, 2010 at the Ritz Charles in Carmel, Indiana. 
 
IOA has a great line-up of speakers from Alabama, Ohio, and Indiana who will be presenting the latest information on medications and treatments that will become the keystones of the way you practice in the future.

Appreciating the Complexities of

Glaucomatous Eyes – Inside and Out

Learn how one doctor treated and managed a glaucoma patient who had multiple ocular conditions that contributed to ocular surface disease symptoms. The course will include a detailed discussion about data from a number of studies on the impact IOP-lowering drugs have on the ocular surface and why it’s important to use medications that are free of benzalkonium chloride (BAK) to prevent further ocular surface damage.

Oral Anti-Infectives in Eye Care (updated course description)

This course will review the use of oral anti-infective pharmaceutical agents in the management of ocular conditions.  Emphasis will be placed on drug mechanisms of action, spectrum of activity, drug resistance and management guidelines for common ocular conditions.

Injectable Medication in Eye Care

Pharmaceutical properties of and uses for various medication utilized in injectable therapy will be presented. Agents such as anesthetics, steroids, antibiotics and diagnostic dyes will also be discussed in detail.

Oral (and topical) Steroids for the Eye

This course covers the pharmacology and clinical applications of both topical and oral steroids utilized in eye care. Each available topical preparation is discussed along with oral formulations. Clinical applications, side effects and contraindications will be emphasized.
