Big eyes, big risks - Report illegal contact lens sales
|
|
The dangerous fashion trend involving decorative or circle contact lenses continues to grow at an alarming pace. The Indiana Optometry Board is asking consumers who know of the illegal sale of these lenses to file a complaint with the Indiana Attorney General’s office. www.in.gov/attorneygeneral. It is illegal in Indiana to sell contact lenses unless the buyer has a valid prescription. Recent incidents in North Carolina and Georgia indicate the trend is far from waning. One woman in the Charlotte area purchased the lenses at a local flea market. http://www.wsoctv.com/news/28006869/detail.html?taf=char A similar scenario took place in Atlanta in which the consumer ended up with a serious eye infection. The illegal contact lens craze gained tremendous popularity from Lady Gaga’s wide-eyed look. Teenagers and young women seem to be especially enamored with the circle lenses. They are widely available on the Internet, convenience stores, flea markets and retail outlets where they are sold as fashion accessories. The lenses pose serious eye risks including conjunctivitis, allergic reactions, corneal abrasion, as well as reduced vision, glare and other vision impairments.
