In 1969, the United States Surgeon General declared, “We can close the books on infectious disease.” Unfortunately, bacteria are alive and well and sometimes even gaining on us. Some believe sooner or later antibiotics will become useless because of resistance. This course will look at proper prescribing practices, patient issues, antibiotics issues, antibiotic arms race, contact lens wear, dermatologic conditions (lid disease, rosacea and blepharitis), the private lives of bacteria and microbial keratitis strategies.

The House of Delegates is the highest governing body of the Indiana Optometric Association.  Delegates are chosen by IOA local societies to attend this event and consider policy for the IOA.  If you are interested in serving as a delegate, contact your local society president prior to the Convention.

2-4 p.m. – A Concise, Clinical Approach to Neuroanatomy for Optometrists - Lawrence A. Richardson, O.D. Tuba City IHS Hospital, Tuba City, Arizona


This lecture takes a clinical approach to neuro-optometry and the neuroanatomy of the visual system. It uses an anterior to posterior clinical oriented review of the visual pathway, the ocular motor pathway, pupils and the ocular sensory pathway. Using extensive examples of neuroimages and detailed diagrams, common pathologies will be reviewed.

This course will cover a wide range of retina topics, including the latest in prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusions. The current indications for anti-VEGF agents and the role of the primary care optometrist in co-management will be emphasized.

The course will examine vitreo-macular, vitreo-retinal, and vitreo-disc traction. There will be an extensive discussion on the pathophysiology of a PVD and will include partial and total PVDs. OCT allows for a view of the vitreous and retina never before seen clinically.

This course is specifically designed to cover scleral lens design and application for the novice to the most advanced contact lens practitioner. Selecting lens designs, topography considerations and unique properties of scleral lenses will be discussed. Scleral lenses are not as difficult as they may seem, but have endless possibilities. Once you fit a scleral lens, you’ll be hooked.

Slit lamp photography with a hand held digital camera is easy and inexpensive and you can bill for it! It is great for patient education, photo documentation and contact lens fitting consultation. This course covers everything from how to choose a camera, set up the shot, lighting strategies, file organization and billing and coding.
